Just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, South Walton Fire District crews got reports of flames and smoke coming from the roof of Goatfeathers Seafood Market. The building sits near the corner of County Highway 30A and Gulfview Heights Street. Firefighters found heavy fire on the second floor. Staff were evacuated, and crews spent hours keeping the roof and upper floor from collapsing. Crews closed 30A in both directions through the afternoon and expected to reopen it around 8 a.m. Thursday.
Nobody was hurt. WJHG reported that investigators' first findings pointed to an accidental kitchen fire and that the building was badly damaged. For anyone who bought shrimp or grouper at the Blue Mountain counter and had it steamed on the spot, the practical question came a week later at dinnertime: where do I go now?
The answer is less simple than it seems. The Goatfeathers name is still on two other seafood counters, but neither has posted a dated update since the fire. The counters with confirmed hours that sell raw Gulf fish are farther east on 30A and out on US-98.
The statement Goatfeathers posted after the fire, signed by Pat Miller, did not give a reopening date. He also made clear that six months is the earliest estimate, not a promise.
"At this point, we do not know exactly how long Goatfeathers will be closed. Realistically, we expect it could be at least six months, and even that may be optimistic."
In the same message, Miller said the business is committed to doing everything it can to "move forward, rebuild, and reopen as soon as possible." As of early October, we have not found any public update on rebuilding progress, a pop-up, or a target date. Six months from August 12 is mid-February 2027, and by Miller's own account it could take longer. For now, the counter at the 3800 block is off the list through the holidays and into the new year.
The west end of 30A lost a second long-running spot a month later. On September 14, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club announced that Vue on 30a had closed permanently. An inspection found water intrusion and indoor air quality problems, and the building was already set to be replaced under the club's long-range master plan. The beach club first opened on that site in 1971. Vue was a restaurant, not a market, but its closing leaves that stretch of 30A with fewer familiar places than it had at the start of summer.
Many people know Goatfeathers only from the Blue Mountain building. Two other counters carry the name, and both are worth knowing about. Both also need a phone call before you go.
Goatfeathers Seagrove Market, 4042 East County Highway 30A. Visit South Walton still lists this market for fish cut daily and steaming. Its online ordering page lists it as "Goatfeathers East," open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Neither listing is dated, and we found no post-fire source confirming that this counter has served customers since August 12. We also found nothing saying it has closed. If it is open, it is the closest Goatfeathers counter to the damaged building, just a couple hundred numbers east on the same highway.
Goatfeathers at 30Avenue, 12805 US-98, Suite O101, Inlet Beach. Its own site calls it a "new location" of Goatfeathers Seafood Market and Café. We could not confirm whether the same owners run it. The seafood counter sells fresh fish, shrimp, shellfish, crab meat, prepared deli items and house-made condiments, and it steams your seafood for free. It also carries wine, beer and bread, and a 35-seat café serves grilled, fried and raw seafood. A customer review from August 21 described the fish on display there, which suggests the counter was open after the fire. That is a single review, not an announcement from the business. Call 850-909-0090 to confirm before you drive.
These are the counters that a local source covered in 2026 and that list their hours, ordered from the Blue Mountain end eastward and then west to Destin.
Buddy's Seafood Market, 5231 E. County Highway 30A, Seagrove. This is the closest market on 30A with posted daily hours. Emerald Coast Magazine's July 2026 guide to local seafood markets describes it as a specialist in wild-caught Florida shrimp, steamed and seasoned to order. The case also holds local grouper, snapper and mahi, depending on the season and what's available. The prepared items cover most of a weeknight dinner: tuna dip, crab dip, gumbo, cocktail sauce and key lime pie, plus a takeout steam bar. Buddy's is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, and online orders close at 5 p.m.
Market 30A at Destin Ice Market 30A, 13063 US-98 E, Inlet Beach. This is a cafe, gourmet market and fish counter in one stop. It sells raw Gulf shrimp, grouper, snapper and oysters, and it does steamed or boiled shrimp and full boils to go. Emerald Coast Magazine also mentions specialty foods, curated wines and a café menu with sandwiches and salads. The market is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and the steamer shuts down at 5:30. If you're having something steamed, that half hour before closing matters.
Sexton's Seafood Market, 601 Harbor Boulevard, Destin. This is the farthest drive, but you'll recognize the blue-and-white building. It has been locally owned for more than 40 years. Fresh local fish comes in daily and is sold both retail and wholesale to area restaurants. The Destin Log reported in April 2025 that Sexton's had reopened, with hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The July 2026 magazine guide still includes it. Those hours come from 2025, so check them before a special trip.
Sea Market, at 16055 Emerald Coast Parkway, Suite 109, in Destin, says on its own site that it cuts fresh local seafood in-house. It lists hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. We found no dated 2026 coverage of it, so put it in the same call-first group as the two Goatfeathers counters.

FWC made one change this fall that affects anyone who fishes from a private boat. A September 23 release from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission added eight days to the 2026 Gulf private recreational red snapper season. The season is now open Sept. 23 through Oct. 4, closed Oct. 5 through 8, and open again every day from Oct. 9 through Oct. 22. After that, the season moves to weekends and holidays: Oct. 23 to 25, Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, three November weekends, Thanksgiving weekend, December weekends, Christmas weekend, and Jan. 1 to 4, 2027.
These dates apply to anglers on private boats and to charters without a federal permit, which are limited to state waters. They do not set what you'll find in a market's case. Market fish is commercial catch, and Buddy's describes its snapper as depending on season and availability. If a neighbor plans to go out between Oct. 9 and 22, this two-week stretch is the best chance this fall for a snapper dinner that never went through a market. For a store-bought fillet, call ahead to Buddy's or Market 30A and ask what came in.
When the Blue Mountain building reopens, that counter will be back in the rotation. Until then, the steamer closes at 5:30 at Market 30A in Inlet Beach, and Buddy's stops taking online orders at 5 p.m. in Seagrove.
If you own a home along 30A and rent it out, or host family through the holidays, your guest guide probably still sends people to the Blue Mountain counter.
